Send Push
When we travel, we make memories but some places get etched in our heart and soul forever. One such worth-mentioning journey is a spiritual sojourn to Madhya Pradesh’s two jyotirlinga temples, Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain and Omkareshwar near Indore. Also known as the “heart of India,” Madhya Pradesh attracts Shiva devotees from across the globe for these temples.

A visit to these temples is not just a pilgrimage, but a soul-stirring journey through time, legend, and divine energy! Let’s find more about these revered temples:

About Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple

Not many must be aware of the fact that Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain is also among India’s seven sacred Moksha-puris. Mahakaleshwar is known as one of the most powerful Shiva Jyotirlinga temples and what distinguishes it is its south-facing ( Dakshinamukhi) form which is a rare orientation. It is believed to destroy negative forces and grant moksha (liberation).

Here the morning aarti is performed using sacred ash. It is believed that centuries ago, the aarti was performed using the ashes of human bodies. Attending this ritual is a memorable and goosebumpy experience! The entire place gets filled with chants and devotees feel the intense spiritual presence of Shiva.
Advance online registration is suggested for Bhasma Aarti.

The temple’s architecture has Maratha and Bhumija touch and it showcases stunning pillars and a shikhara. Nearby are the ghats of the Kshipra River which add to the sacred atmosphere.

About Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Temple

Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is only a few hours’ drive from Ujjain. This temple is set on a pretty island on the Narmada River which is shaped as ‘OM’. The place has a calm and meditative energy as compared to the dynamic energy of Mahakaleshwar. Standing amidst a labyrinth of lanes and stairways, the sanctum here holds the Shiva lingam at its spiritual core.

Parikrama ritual: The Parikrama (circumambulation) ritual holds immense significance. This 7-kilometer spiritual walk along a marked path is believed to purify the soul.

Travel Tips:

Nearest airports to the temples is Devi Ahilyabai Holkar International Airport, Indore. Visit Mahakaleshwar Temple; attend the evening aarti, explore the ghats and visit nearby temples.

After witnessing Mahakaleshwar Bhasma Aarti, you can drive towards Omkareshwar. It is approx. 4.5 hours drive. After Omkareshwar darshan and parikrama, stay at a hotel and relax.

The best time to undertake this spiritual journey is October to March. The weather remains cool and pleasant during these months. The Mahashivratri festival (usually in February or March) is especially vibrant, but be prepared for crowds.

In short, this journey isn’t just a physical one but has a deep spiritual significance. While one temple roars with fiery protection, the other hums with cosmic peace. Together, these temples represent the two faces of Lord Shiva.
