Mumbai Weather: IMD issues orange alert as heavy rainfall predicted on until Wednesday

Send Push
Mumbai is bracing for another round of intense monsoon showers, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy rainfall for Wednesday as well as Thursday.

Over the next 24 to 36 hours, the metro city could receive over 150 mm of rain, prompting concerns over waterlogging and traffic disruptions across several areas.

An orange alert—a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall—has been issued for Wednesday, July 24, for Mumbai and its neighbouring districts, including Thane and Palghar.

This alert suggests the possibility of intense, isolated spells that could disrupt daily life.

Local authorities, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), are on high alert. Flood-prone areas such as Sion, King's Circle, Hindmata, Kurla, Andheri Subway, and underpasses in Dahisar and Malad are being closely monitored. With the ground already saturated from recent rainfall, even moderate showers may lead to rapid waterlogging.

Mumbai weather forecast
Rainfall is expected to pick up intensity by late morning or early afternoon today, continuing well into the night and tomorrow.

The IMD warns that isolated intense spells could affect road and rail services, urging commuters to plan ahead, leave early, and avoid non-essential travel during peak rainfall hours.

Temperatures will hover around 29–30°C, with high humidity making conditions uncomfortable. Residents are advised to:

  • Carry rain gear and avoid stepping out unless necessary
  • Steer clear of seafronts, creeks, and manholes
  • Stay updated through official weather alerts
  • Keep emergency contacts and essentials handy

Public safety & travel advisory
The BMC has increased preparedness measures, especially in low-lying and high-risk zones. Fisherfolk have been advised not to venture out to sea, and urban transport services are monitoring potential disruptions.

As Mumbai resumes regular operations post-monsoon holidays, officials urge residents to prioritise safety, allow for delays, and stay indoors during periods of heavy rain.

The monsoon isn't done with the city yet—caution, planning, and awareness remain key over the next 48 hours.
