Mumbai: Jio Platforms Ltd (JPL), which holds Reliance Industries’ telecom and digital businesses, posted a 12.8% year-on-year rise in its net profit for the quarter ended September, driven by strong subscriber additions and higher-paying data users.
JPL’s consolidated net profit for the quarter stood at Rs 7,379 crore, up from Rs 6,539 crore a year earlier and Rs 7,110 crore in the June quarter. Its revenue from operations rose 14.6% on year, the company said in a statement on Friday.
“Digital services business continues to scale up with positive momentum in subscriber addition across homes and mobility services, driven by Jio’s network and technology leadership,” Mukesh Ambani, chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, said.
“Jio’s innovative radio solutions and ubiquitous stand-alone 5G network have enabled it to provide broadband connectivity to households across India. We continue to augment our capabilities with pioneering systems and platforms, ensuring the benefits of an ever-evolving technology landscape for all Indians,” he added.

Jio still lags rival Bharti Airtel’s ARPU of Rs 250 a month in the April-June period. The Sunil Mittal-led telco is yet to report the second quarter results.
Reliance Jio Infocomm, the telecom unit under JPL, reported a 11.9% year-on-year growth in net profit for the September quarter at Rs 6,972 crore, while its revenue from operations rose nearly 12.4% to Rs 31,857 crore. This compares with a net profit of Rs 6,711 crore on a revenue of Rs 30,882 crore in the first quarter.
However, the numbers trailed average analyst expectation of Rs 7,018.3-crore net profit on a revenue of Rs 32,608 crore.
Jio Infocomm, the country’s top telecom operator, comprises the bulk of JPL's operations.
Swelling Subscriber Base
During the second quarter, Jio gained 8.3 million users – higher than analysts’ expectation of around 7 million – boosting its overall base to 506.4 million. The telco continued to gain users from financially stressed Vodafone Idea and state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL).
The company ended the quarter with 234 million 5G subscribers, up from 212 million at the end of June. 5G now contributes 50% of its total wireless traffic.

Anshuman Thakur, head of strategy at Reliance Jio, said the firm is recording significant uptick in rural data consumption and 5G traffic.
“Pan-India, 5G traffic has grown 2x in the last year, but rural sites have shown higher growth…which is very positive for us, because one, it shows that there is demand coming in from all geographies…and two, in many of these areas, we are the only 5G service provider, so we have a healthy lead,” Thakur said in the post-earnings call late on Friday.
Jio 5G has also achieved globally highest 5G data productivity per unit of spectrum, he noted.
JPL’s Q1 earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) margin narrowed to 51.6% sequentially from 51.8% in the first quarter on higher depreciation and finance costs. But margins expanded from 50.2% a year ago.
Per capita data consumption at the end of September grew to 38.7 GB per month from 37 GB per month at the end of June due to an expansion of Jio’s 5G services and increased consumption by fibre-to-home users.
Total wireless data consumption rose to 58.4 billion GB from 54.7 billion GB in the preceding quarter, while voice consumption rose to 1.50 trillion minutes from 1.49 trillion minutes in the first quarter.
