Shubman Gill is likely to be appointed India’s new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma, and will lead the side in the three-match series in Australia starting October 19, ESPNcricinfo reported.
Rohit, 38, has been included in the squad as a batter, along with Virat Kohli, marking their return to the Indian ODI side for the first time since the Champions Trophy in March, according to the report.
The selection panel, chaired by former India fast bowler Ajit Agarkar, met on Saturday in Ahmedabad, where India are currently playing the first Test of the series against West Indies. Gill, 26, had taken over as India’s Test captain earlier this year and was appointed vice-captain of the T20I team during the 2025 Asia Cup.
With the ODI captaincy, he now holds formal leadership responsibilities across all three formats.

Rohit had been India’s full-time ODI captain since December 2021. During his tenure, he led India in 56 ODIs, winning 42, losing 12, with one tie and one no-result. He guided India to Asia Cup titles in 2018 (as stand-in captain) and 2023, reached the finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup, and capped his captaincy by winning the 2025 Champions Trophy in March.
The upcoming Australia series will mark the first international appearance in over seven months for both Rohit and Kohli, who have retired from Tests and T20Is.
Following the Australia tour, India’s next ODI engagements include a three-match home series against South Africa in November-December and a series against New Zealand in January.
