Cachar (Assam) [India], November 6 (ANI): Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has accused the Congress of wanting to put "Hindu Bengalis in danger" and acting against their interests in Assam after the Congress questioned the citizenship of the BJP candidate for the Dholai assembly constituency.
"Congress wants to put people in danger... Congress wants to put Hindu Bengalis in danger and is trying to open new cases against Hindu Bengalis. We solve the issues, but Congress wants to open a new issue against Hindu Bengali. This issue will not be limited to Nihar Ranjan Das, it will affect thousands of people. Congress is working for whom, here Congress is working against the Hindu Bengali people," CM Biswa said on Tuesday.
His comments came after the Congress questioned the citizenship of the BJP candidate for the Dholai assembly constituency.
Earlier, Assam Pradesh Congress President Bhupen Kumar Borah questioned Nihar Ranjan Das's citizenship, urging the Chief Minister to clarify why a Bangladeshi candidate has been nominated.
"Whether he (Nihar Ranjan Das) is a Bangladeshi, the Assam Chief Minister will have to answer. Who had said it, a BJP leader who is close to the Chief Minister said this. The Chief Minister should tell the people of Assam why the BJP has given a Bangladeshi candidature here," Borah said.
The Assam Chief Minister on Tuesday addressed two election campaign rallies in Dholai in Cachar district.
The Assam Chief Minister will address election campaign rallies in Bongaigaon and Sidli assembly seats today.
Both the BJP and Congress have ramped up their election campaigns ahead of the by-elections for five assembly constituencies in Assam.
Notably, by-elections will be held in five assembly constituencies in Assam--Behali, Dholai, Samaguri, Bongaigaon, and Sidli on November 13.
The seats Behali, Dhalai, Bogaigaon, Sidli and Samaguri, fell vacant after the MLAs representing the constituencies were elected to the Lok Sabha. (ANI)
