Zinedine Zidane's admission on Man Utd is music to Sir Jim Ratcliffe's ears

Zinedine Zidane has been linked with the Manchester United job in the past, and his fondness for the club's stadium has resurfaced amid fresh uncertainty over the future of current boss .

Former manager Zidane was linked with an Old Trafford switch in 2021 when United sacked . Ultimately, though, the club put Ralf Rangnick in temporary charge for the remainder of the season before appointing Ten Hag the following summer.

Despite the club winning two domestic cups under their current manager, uncertain league form has left the ex-Ajax boss' future in doubt. United finished eighth last season and sit 14th going into Saturday's match against Brentford, with a lack of goals an issue.

Zidane has not rushed back into management since leaving Real Madrid in 2021. However, the 52-year-old - and he's already made it clear he's a fan of Old Trafford as a stadium, even as the future of the stadium remains uncertain.

In September, Zidane spoke to about his favourite away stadiums to visit as a player. Anfield and Old Trafford were his top two as a visitor, though he said neither compared to the Bernabeu in Madrid.

“We played some impressive matches against them [at Old Trafford]," Zidane said. He was part of the Madrid team which eliminated United from the 2002-03 , winning 3-1 at home before progressing with a 4-3 defeat in England as Ronaldo scored a memorable hat-trick.

He was also the manager of Madrid's Under-17 side in the 2012-13 season as the senior side enjoyed another memorable Old Trafford trip, winning 2-1 in Sir Alex Ferguson's final Champions League game. He also enjoyed a win at Anfield with France at Euro 96, before fighting off Jurgen Klopp's Reds for an aggregate victory as Madrid manager in 2021.

United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has laid out plans to move United to a 100,000-seater . This would involve building on land adjacent to Old Trafford, with questions over what would happen to the club's long-term home.

In September, former United captain urged fans to respond to a survey designed to take their temperature over Ratcliffe's plans. “Old Trafford has evolved throughout its history and it’s clear we are at a point where it has to change again to ensure that has a -class stadium befitting the world’s greatest club and the world’s greatest fans," said Neville, who is also a member of the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force.

“Old Trafford should be a stadium that the Manchester United fan base can take pride in, so I urge the fans to complete the survey, and participate in the wider consultation, to help shape the Task Force feasibility work and ultimately inform the club’s final decision on the stadium’s future.”
