Wakefield Trinity's Max Jowitt reveals bizarre wedding day details

Wakefield star is already in the doghouse - just two days after getting married!

The prolific full-back takes on in the Championship Grand Final on Saturday evening. But it was supposed to be his wedding day until the fixture list caused chaos. Jowitt had to get hitched to Lauren at Harrogate’s Wharfedale Grange on Thursday instead - and was then back in training today. He explained: “We booked it a while ago for the middle of October making sure the season was over.

“But then the new league format got introduced and I realised if we got to the Grand Final it’d be that weekend. She wasn’t impressed! But you just have to get on with it. It was still an amazing day. It couldn’t have gone any better.

"It was quite a hectic day but we got through it all. It was a bit strange having a dry wedding and then leaving our lass in bed at 7.30 this morning - but at least I remember everything from it!”

Warrington’s Jordy Crowther was his best man - “he did have a drink!” - but now all eyes are on tomorrow night's showdown. Championship player of the year Jowitt said: “We’ve achieved two of our targets by winning the 1895 Cup at Wembley and the League Leaders’ Shield. But we want to get all three.

“People expect us to go up to Super League no matter what with the IMG gradings. But we still want to win this Grand Final. This is what we set out to do and it would top things off perfectly.”

Jowitt is also chasing down a huge record by becoming the first player in British rugby league history to score 500 points in a single season. He moved into second place on the all-time list during Sunday’s 22-13 semi-final win against York. Just three more points will see him surpass the legendary Leeds and Great Britain stand-off Lewis Jones, who scored 496 in 1956-57.

Jowitt, who has amassed 23 tries and 143 goals, has already gone past iconic figures David Watkins and Andy Farrell in the all-time list this term. He admitted: “I didn’t know who Lewis Jones was before this. Obviously, he was well before my time. And I wasn’t even born when a lot of these players were scoring points so there’s a few I don’t know.

“But there’s some great names on the list and it’s great to be on there with them. I hope I do break it but I’ve put it to the back of my mind and the main thing is focusing on getting the win.”

Jowitt’s decision to stick with Wakefield after they suffered relegation from Super League last season has certainly paid off. Trinity, always battling financially in the top-flight, have gone from strength to strength since being taken over by millionaire local businessman Matt Ellis. He has transformed the West Yorkshire club on and off the pitch to the extent it is widely believed they will secure a Super League spot for 2025 - at London's expense - regardless of Saturday’s outcome.

The make-up of next year’s competition will officially be announced on Wednesday. Jowitt, who debuted for Trinity in 2014, could easily have moved elsewhere last year but instead signed a long-term contract intent on getting them back up. And he said: “Since Matt took over, the place is completely different compared to what Trinity was like before.

“He has done so much for the club and transformed it. It would make it all worthwhile [if promoted]. I wanted to stay loyal to Wakfield after all the injuries I had last year. “And they are my hometown club. We want to be back in Super League and, if we do go back up, we want to be competing for those play-off spots next season. We’ve made some good signings and the whole place is buzzing.”
