The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for fog which covers several areas of the country - including North West England, Wales and the West Midlands.

Forecasters have warned that areas of fog could cause delays and slower journeys for around five hours on Monday morning. This is one of the first occasions in the autumn when widespread fog develops overnight and lasts "well until the morning", the Met Office said.

Due to severe weather conditions, there is a risk of delays or cancellation to flights too, the weather service added. The warning is in force from 5am to 10am on Monday, as forecasters said some of the fog could be "quite dense".

The weather service shared tips for people heading out on Monday morning, saying: "Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, leaving extra journey time, or amending plans if necessary. Make sure you know how to switch on your fog lights, and check they are working before setting off on your journey.

"Bus and train services, as well as flights and ferry travel may also be affected; check for updates from your travel company and follow their advice." The Met Office also shared a list of the regions and local authorities affected.

It comes after forecast maps revealed that after a few days of chilly temperatures, the weather is set to get warmer again by the middle of next week. The start of autumn has brought chillier conditions and widespread frost overnight around the country, with a low of minus 2.7C recorded in North Yorkshire on Thursday evening.

However, after a warmer weekend, temperatures are set to become even warmer, according to WXCharts. The maps show that the mercury is set to reach 25C at midday on Wednesday, September 18, and Brits will enjoy similar temperatures next Friday and Saturday too.
