A survey of 2,000 adults revealed that Brits only feel in good health for half the time (42%) - equating to 152 days a year.

The study, commissioned by Optibac Probiotics, found that the rest of the time is spent battling various ailments including colds, poor sleep, stress and digestive issues.

Over a third feel constantly run down with sniffles, coughs and sore throats during the winter months. And as early as April, 40% start to feel the effects of hayfever.

Given the multitude of health complaints, it's not surprising that 72% are interested in boosting their immune system.

In addition to being fed up with catching coughs and colds, Brits are eager to be in full health so they can live life to the fullest and be in good shape for their family.

However, the research revealed that 31% are unaware of the connection between good gut health and their immune system.

Dr Kate Steed, a Gut Microbiologist from Optibac Probiotics, said: "Probiotics, known to benefit gut health, can be particularly effective when they contain carefully researched strains of beneficial bacteria."

Around 69% struggle with gastric issues, such as constipation (22%), acid reflux (22%) and stomach ache (22%). With 39% dealing with these symptoms as often as once a week.

"Digestive issues can really reduce quality of life, impacting social activities, relationships and even productivity at work" she added.

"Having one less thing to worry about can be life changing. Studies indicate that maintaining a healthy gut plays a key role in overall wellness."

She emphasises the importance of choosing scientifically-backed strains when looking for probiotics. "Those looking to try them should opt for strains backed by scientific evidence. ".
