Cristiano Ronaldo is set to be honoured with a limited-edition coin – and it could become the ultimate collector’s item.

The Manchester United and Real Madrid icon has set countless records during his illustrious career, and the rivalry between him and Lionel Messi will go down in football history as potentially the greatest of all time. There is no doubt that the 39-year-old has entered the twilight of his playing days, but that did not stop Ronaldo notching up his 900th career goal during the recent international break.

While he has won five Ballon d’Ors and just as many Champions League titles, his Euro 2016 triumph with Portugal will undoubtedly stand among his proudest achievements. On the international stage, Ronaldo has scored the most goals in history, netting 132 in 214 caps – and there could be plenty more to come as he continues to start for Portugal.

Ronaldo has refused to place a timeline on when he might finally hang up his boots, but there has been reports that the forward’s achievements could be commemorated by Portugal with a special €7 coin. The theoretical ‘CR7’ coin would be way more valuable than its face value, though, with expert estimates reaching up to £113k.

"With Cristiano Ronaldo's status as one of the most recognisable athletes in the world, the CR7 Euro coin is expected to draw tremendous interest from both collectors and fans alike,” said Dan Barrett of Pacific Precious Metals. “Given the coin’s gold content and Ronaldo’s worldwide following, we could see this coin selling up to $150,000 [£113k] on the collector’s market.

“The combination of a limited edition, gold content, and Ronaldo’s brand will ensure this coin's value appreciates rapidly, especially once it hits the secondary market. Collectors will see it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

The creation of a Ronaldo coin would be recognition of his cultural significance to Portugal, as well as becoming a prized possession for global fans of the striker. The Al-Nassr forward has remained tight-lipped about his aspirations of playing at the 2026 World Cup but is proud of the trophies he has won for his country – Euro 2016 and the 2019 Nations League. And he already has his sights set on his next target after reaching 900 goals.

"Only me and the people around me know how difficult it is to work daily to be physically and psychologically well and reach goal 900,” Ronaldo said. “It's a unique milestone in my career and it was with a lot of emotion I celebrated that goal.

"It represents a lot. It was the number I wanted to achieve for a long time and I knew I would achieve it because, as I continue to play, it would happen naturally. I already won two trophies for Portugal, something I really wanted. Whatever comes next is spectacular."

Ahead of that game, Ronaldo explained why his next landmark will truly set him apart. In a bygone era, a cluster of players – including Pele – managed to score 1,000 goals. But not all their strikes are counted as they featured in high-profile friendlies and tour games.

"Soon I will do 900 and after that it will be 1,000,” Ronaldo told Rio Ferdinand. "If I don’t have injuries, that is most important, I want that. My challenge is to reach 1,000 goals, with one difference – all the goals that I score will have video. So I can prove that."
