Premier League make decision on Michael Oliver after two controversies

Michael Oliver's decision to show Leandro Trossard the red card in the clash against Manchester City has been backed by a Premier League panel.

The Belgian was sent off during Sunday's 2-2 draw at the Etihad, receiving his second yellow just before half-time for kicking the ball away, much to the dismay of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta. Post-match, Arteta expressed his frustration, saying: "I think it's very clear. Very obvious. Hopefully what 100 percent of what people thinks. It's not my job to come here and judge what happened."

"My job is to survive in the most difficult environment you can throw in football for 55 minutes. And try to get things done to survive. That's my job, the rest is not my job. It's already the second time it has happened in five games, which is really, really worrying if we want to see the best Premier League."

Despite Arteta's evident irritation, the panel's review suggests Oliver made the correct call. According to ESPN, the incident was put to a five-man refereeing panel, resulting in a 4-1 vote supporting the decision. Another contentious moment from the same match also passed without further action.

City's Erling Haaland was seen throwing the ball at Gabriel Magalhaes' head following John Stones' goal, but Oliver opted not to book him, and the FA have decided against additional sanctions.

The Premier League panel concurred with the decision, ruling it wasn't a major match incident verdict unlikely to appease former Arsenal great Ian Wright, who criticised Haaland post-match.

"Throwing the ball at Gabi's head when he's not looking. When Gabi's back's turned to him. Real coward's move. Gabi would look him in the eye, you know."

"I'm looking at this as a really good defender versus striker, for the years to come. Them two, I love watching them, and then you do a coward's move like that. That's what bothered me more than anything else. I thought you [Haaland] were bigger than that."

Following his duties at the Etihad, Oliver is set to return to Premier League action. He's on deck as VAR assistant for Chelsea's showdown with Brighton on Saturday and will take charge of Southampton's visit to Bournemouth on Monday.
