People urged to use one scent in their car to stop unwanted visitors

Autumn is a wonderful season filled with cosy nights, walks filled with golden leaves and warming soups, but it also brings spiders indoors.

As mating season for our eight-legged friends continues, you may have seen them around your home, but they can also set up a base in your car. Even if you don't have a fear of spiders, the last thing you would want is to see one crawling about while you are trying to focus on the road.

With that in mind, experts from have said there is one scent you should be using in the car to help keep the creepies out. Racing driver Tom Chilton said: "Strong-smelling scents repel spiders, so if you want your car smelling fresh, while also keeping arachnids from occupying it, then using peppermint scents is a great option.

"There are quick ways to do so like buying a scented air freshener, or you can go for a cheaper option of leaving peppermint-soaked cotton balls in the nooks and crannies of your car."

He also suggested ensuring your car is free of debris as it can provide a warm hiding place for spiders. Tom also said to take care where you park, he said: "One of the easiest changes you can make to help reduce the risk of spiders getting in your car is being more thoughtful about where you park.

"If you can, avoid leaving your car near shrubbery – spiders tend to live in hedges and trees and will come down from these to look for somewhere warmer as winter comes. By parking in open areas, you reduce the chance of spiders falling into your vehicle."
