Olympics 2024: Anna Henderson wins Team GB's second medal with silver in cycling time trial

Anna Henderson won Team GB's second medal of the Paris Olympic Games, taking silver in the women's cycling time trial.

Henderson edged out American Chloe Dygert by less than a second. However, neither of them was able to get near gold medalist Grace Brown of Australia.

In damp, treacherous conditions that found out several riders, Henderson clocked a time of 41 minutes 10.7 seconds over the 32.4km course through the centre of Paris, one minute 31 seconds down on Brown's gold medal-winning ride. Dygert was among those to hit the deck and that proved critical as she lost the 15-second advantage she had held over Henderson at the first intermediate time check and came home nine tenths of a second off the Brit's time.

The conditions took their toll on a number of riders, with plenty of fallers throughout the afternoon. However, Henderson, 25, took advantage to make it onto the podium.

Henderson's achievement was made even more impressive by the fact that she has recovered from breaking her collarbone twice this year. "Most sureal moment of my career - becoming an Olympian - the nerves are there, but feeling excited and grateful to even be on the start line," she wrote on Instagram before her ride.

"Big shoutout to everybody who has sent me a good luck message! This means so much and even if I can’t reply to every message, I see it, and I’m taking that support with me."

The medal was Team GB's second of the games. Earlier in the day, Scarlett Mew Jensen and Yasmin Harper had won bronze in the women's 3m synchro diving behind pairs from China and the United States.

"All the effort this year has been worth it," Henderson told the BBC after her medal was confirmed. I've broken my collarbone twice year and it has been a really rough year, so to achieve a goal like this is unbelievable."

"I missed the worlds' podium last year by two seconds and I was thinking to myself, 'This is not going to happen again.' So I kept pushing all the way to the line, really horrible conditions out there today so I was really thankful that I could just stay upright on my bike as well. I was a bit of a grandma on the corners but that paid off and I used my power on the straights, and here I am."

"It is really strange, I kind of blacked out through the whole thing. I knew I had to be super cautious because a lot of the girls had problems today. I am just really happy to be here and happy it paid off. I can't say anything else."
