Liverpool's Anthony Gordon pursuit takes twist as 'lucrative deal' close to being agreed

Send Push

Liverpool target Anthony Gordon is said to be close to agreeing a new long-term contract with Newcastle.

The Reds are admirers of the England winger, 23, and were offered the chance to sign him in the summer. The proposed deal, worth £75million, was mooted as Newcastle sought to meet the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) back in June.

Liverpool were set to sell Joe Gomez to Newcastle in a separate £45m transaction which was dependent on Gordon moving to Anfield before both deals collapsed.

Their interest in Gordon has remained, though, while it emerged earlier this month that Arsenal were also in the frame for the former Everton man. However, it now seems that Newcastle are close to tying Gordon down to a lucrative new deal.

Talks have already taken place between the club and Gordon and The Mail now claim that the player is close to agreeing terms with the Magpies, who he joined back in 2023.

It's said the framework of a deal is now in place after preliminary talks were held back in the summer. And club sources are confident that Gordon will soon put pen to paper despite interest from elsewhere.

That news will come as a blow to Liverpool, even though they signed Federico Chiesa from Juventus last month. The winger has looked sharp in his first appearances in a Reds shirt but the same report claims their interest in Gordon has not waned.

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe addressed the transfer speculation surrounding Gordon back in August. He expressed a desire to keep the winger, who racked up 21 goal contributions in the Premier League last season - but admitted he couldn't guarantee Gordon would stay.

He said: “I’ve seen Anthony come back in a good place. Especially this past week, he had a really short training period before that first game.

“We put him in as he’s a difference maker, it takes the younger players less time to get up to speed but I think this week he has looked back to his best.

“I have been in the game too long to make those statements [on whether Gordon could join Liverpool]. What I will say is from my part and the club’s part we will do everything we can to keep our best players but I am not a fortune teller.”
