Liam Payne's desperate wish for Niall Horan days before tragedy and final selfie

expressed a poignant wish for former bandmate shortly before his tragic death.

The popstar died on Wednesday in Buenos Aires. He was just 31 years old, and leaves behind a seven-year-old son, Bear.

, the band which made Liam a household name, officially split up in 2016, with the five members each pursuing their own individual paths.

In his final weeks, however, Liam's thoughts turned to Niall, revealing that he'd hoped to 'square up a couple things with the boy'.

Taking to Snapchat a few weeks ago, Liam opened up about his wish to reunite with Niall in Argentina, where he's been on tour.

Captioning the clip 'We're going to Argentina to see Nialler', Liam shared: "Niall Horan is playing down there and I think we might just go to say hello. It's been a while since me and Niall have spoken. We've got a lot to talk about. And I would like to square up a couple of things up with the boy."

Clarifying that there was no bad blood between them, Liam continued: "No bad vibes or anything like that. But just … we need to talk."

On October 2, Liam and his girlfriend Kate Cassidy attended one of Niall's gigs at the Movistar Arena, declaring it to be a 'lovely show'. Liam made sure to document the night with plenty of pics and videos, and appeared thrilled to be spending time with his old bandmate.

In one photo, captioned 'Reunited', Liam and Niall could be seen enjoying themselves together once more - his wish for a longed-for catch-up granted. In the text of another pic, Liam said: "So happy I got to see Niall in concert."

This comes as Niall's brother Greg paid tribute to 'top young man' Liam in an emotional post, thanking him for looking out for his younger sibling during their boyband years.

Greg, 37, wrote: "To say I'm heartbroken is an understatement a feeling this morning and all night. You were a top young boy to a man, a son, a brother. You are only one of four lads I was happy enough to take my place in Niall's life as a brother.

"You will be forever missed. Liam, words can't describe how much I want to grab my brother and mind him now while the shows their memories of you and him and the boys.

"My heart goes out to your family parents and sisters and your son Bear and your 1D brothers. 10th October we met and we started out that evening as five families into one big one 1D family. Thank you for all the laughs bro watch down on all your family and mind them lots of love kiddo x x x 1D 4 LIFE x x x"

Liam's body was found in an internal patio of the hotel, with the hotel manager alerting police. It's believed he died instantly, after falling approximately 13 or 14 metres, from 'very serious injuries incompatible with life.'

As reported by news outlet Clarín, a preliminary autopsy has now been completed, with the results determining that the singer died due to 'multiple trauma' and 'internal and external bleeding'.
