Indian summer: New weather maps reveal exactly when and where heat blast will sweep UK

Send Push

Things are starting to feel chilly as autumn weather takes hold - but warm summer-like temperatures will be on their way soon, according to forecasters.

Maps from WXCharts show highs of 19C in parts of the southeast on September 30, which is on the higher end of the seasonal average for this time of year. It has raised hopes of a new phase of warmer weather in autumn, often referred to as an 'Indian summer'. Forecaster James Madden from Exacta Weather is also predicting hot conditions for the start of October amid a mixed weather picture emerging over next few days.

He wrote: "Later next week actually gives us a number of options ranging from more temporary heat to a continuation of cool and unsettled weather, but I would favour a mix of the two from towards the end of next week. This could literally bring a day or two of warm to hot and summery weather and be quickly replaced with more cooler and unsettled weather in the days to follow as the jet stream looks to go a little erratic, which in turn makes the weather much harder to predict and further analysis is required over the coming days. However, our forecast indications do suggest a mix of the two and still favour another heat surge or major heat surge for our earlier given dates of in and around 3rd–8th October, but this doesn't mean there will be no unsettled and cooler weather to contend with."

Before then, this weekend will take on a much colder feel, with many rural areas likely to wake up to frost. Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Brent Walker said: "After the rain through much of this week, things will be turning decidedly cooler into the weekend, with frost likely for much of the UK overnight on Friday and a more autumnal feel to daytime temperatures. A north-westerly flow of air is developing, bringing cooler air from the north over the UK and dropping temperatures into the weekend and possibly below freezing overnight for some. Some isolated showers are possible through the weekend, though it will largely be drier for many, with some sunny spells." He also said there is "potential for further wet and windy weather late on Sunday and into the start of next week", though a clearer picture is expected to develop over the next few days.
