A two-year-old boy who died in a freak fireplace accident whilst playing at home with his sister has been named and pictured for the first time.

Carter Walsh was left with serious injuries following the horror incident and was pronounced dead in hospital a short time later, leaving a community in Wigan in mourning. Neighbours say the fireplace toppled over on the boy whilst he played with his sister on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 18.

The incident triggered a huge emergency service response on and around Fisher Close, Worsley Mesnes, in Greater Manchester - with the North West Air Ambulance also deployed and seen landing on a nearby field.

It has been reported that the children’s mum was away at work and had left the daughter – who is of a legal age to supervise kids – in charge of the boy.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “At around 2.15pm on Wednesday September 18, officers were called to reports regarding a concern for welfare of a child on Fisher Close, Wigan.

“Sadly, despite the best efforts of paramedics, a two-year-old boy later died at hospital. Enquiries are ongoing and officers are supporting the family at this time.” No further details have been released by the force at this stage.

One nearby resident told Wigan Today: “We saw a lot of police and ambulance activity but didn’t know what it was at the time. Now we know, it is appalling news. I feel so sorry for the family.”

Heartbroken loved-ones have since taken to Facebook to share their tributes to the toddler. One person wrote: "Fly high little man. May you forever look over your mummy. My heart breaks for you both, here if you need anything. R.I.P little Carter."

A GoFundMe page has since been launched on behalf of Carter's mum. A message left on the fundraiser by her aunt Karen reads: "Hi my name is Karen I am doing a go fund page on behalf of my niece Samantha who has tragically loss her 2 year old son Carter to a fatal accident."
