Erik ten Hag handed much-needed double injury boost as he fights to save Man Utd job

Send Push

Erik ten Hag has been handed a welcome injury boost ahead of Manchester United's trip to Porto.

Ten Hag is fighting to save his job at Old Trafford following a miserable start to the season which has seen them lose three of their opening six Premier League games. Sunday's miserable defeat to Spurs has ramped up the pressure on the Dutchman.

He now takes his side to Portugal for their second Europa League match of the campaign, having drawn with Twente in their opening game. The Spurs game left Ten Hag with a number of concerns over his side's performance.

But he was also left bracing for injury news on Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount, both of whom were forced off during the clash at Old Trafford. Now the full extent of their injuries have become clear and there is some much-needed good news for Ten Hag.

Mainoo was spotted taking part in training on Wednesday, having recovered from any injury he suffered against Spurs. The midfielder was joined by Harry Maguire, who missed Sunday's game due to a minor knock.

But both are now in contention to feature against Porto on Thursday night. There is also positive news concerning Mount, with the midfielder's head injury now confirmed as not being a concussion.

He did miss training though, with United taking a precaution with the Englishman after his head wound. United fly out from Manchester Airport later on Wednesday and their travelling squad will be confirmed once they take off for Portugal.

Ten Hag will be praying for a positive result at the Estadio do Dragao as he fights to keep his job. The Dutchman is under serious pressure but insisted after the defeat to Spurs that he is trying to ignore the noise around his situation.

"Of course, there’s always a new game, there will be a new day, and it’s also obvious. You have to learn as a team - it can’t happen in four days now, twice, [that] the defender of the opponent can dribble through the whole park without being stopped," he said.

"Then things are impossible at top football, you can’t make such mistakes, so definitely, we have to address this. But we will bounce back. I think we all made, in togetherness, this decision to stay together, as an ownership, as a leadership group, in the summer.

"And also, we made the decision from a clear review, what we have to improve as an organisation and how also we want to construct a squad. And they are all decision-making in togetherness.

"But also we knew it would take some time because of how the window went, some players late in, like Ugarte, we have to integrate him now. Also, we had to make some improvement in organisation, we still have to deal with some injuries, also from impact players.

"I think we will get better there. We need some time. We are all on one page, one boat, together, the ownership, the leadership group, the staff and players group as well. I don’t have that concern."
