Disney+ hints at Marvel's Agatha All Along season two renewal with surprising awards decision

Disney+ subscribers have been given their biggest hint yet that Agatha All Along could be renewed for a second season.

Marvel’s spookiest series yet follows the powerful witch Agatha Harkness (played by Kathryn Hahn) as she teams up with a mysterious teen (Joe Locke) to try and regain her powers.

Picking up at the end of WandaVision, the adventure starts after Agatha’s showdown with Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) left her trapped and depleted of magic in Westview.

Throughout her quest, she teams up with a ragtag group of witches to form a new coven before some shocking reveals were unveiled, especially regarding her teenage companion and the Green Witch Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza).

Fans may have been expecting Marvel’s latest TV entry to stay a limited series, but an open-ended finale and a surprising move for awards season might suggest otherwise.

Per reports from Variety, Agatha All Along will be campaigning in the comedy series category during the awards circuit, hoping to pick up nods from the Golden Globes, Emmys and more.

While previous Marvel shows have competed in the limited series bracket - albeit with little success - this move could suggest the superhero studio could have more plans for Agatha in store.

This switch-up takes its cues from FX’s Shogun, which had to confirm it had more seasons planned to switch from the limited series to the drama category.

Now Agatha is competing as a comedy, Disney+ could be gearing up for a surprise renewal announcement in the coming weeks.

However, this isn’t the first Marvel show to enter as a different category only for a second season to fail to manifest itself.

While WandaVision, Moon Knight and Ms Marvel were all entered as limited series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier competed as a drama and Hawkeye as a comedy.

Limited series are defined as shows “that tell a complete, non-recurring story. The story arc must be completely resolved within its season, with no on-going storyline and/or main characters in subsequent seasons,” by the Emmys.

And the Golden Globes says it “must tell a complete, non-recurring story” and “not have a continuing storyline and/or main characters in subsequent seasons.”

Now Agatha has wrapped up with its finale airing last Wednesday, Marvel fans are looking ahead to the next instalments of the hit comic book saga.

Next year will see Sam Wilson’s (Anthony Mackie) Captain America burst onto the big screen in Captain America: New World Order, along with Florence Pugh and David Harbour joining forces in Thunderbolts*.

On Disney+, Charlie Cox makes his long-awaited return as New York’s street-level hero in Daredevil: Born Again and Dominique Thorne returns as Riri Williams aka the Iron Man-inspired heroine Ironheart.
