In just a few years as a professional boxer, before he began his Hollywood career, Mickey "had effectively been dismantled," wrote the .

Before being told by advisers to "quit the sport or sustain potentially permanent brain damage", the star broke his nose twice, snapped his cheekbone and damaged his ribs and toes.

In 2009, Mickey confessed to that he'd had a total of six surgeries in his life. "I had my nose broken twice. I had five operations on my nose and one on a smashed cheekbone," he shared.

However, it seemed like the actor had done more than just fixed his cheekbone when he appeared to have had more work done on his face.

In his 1990 film Wild Orchid, Mickey's cheeks were visibly swollen. Later in 2009, he admitted that these changes were indeed due to botched plastic surgery, as many speculated.

"Most of it was to mend the mess of my face because of the boxing," he explained, "but I went to the wrong guy to put my face back together."

Aesthetic doctor and hair transplant surgeon Hala Elgmati talked to the about the possible causes of the actor's ever-changing appearance.

She said: "Looking back to when Mickey was a fresh-faced 19-year-old, he was so handsome. Even up until his forties, with a little sign of aging, he looked masculine and attractive.

"But the work Mickey has done has negatively affected his facial proportions, to the point where it’s now quite jarring to the human eye." The doctor added that the work on The Wrestler star's face looked "botched" and "overdone.

'Too much botox'

Speaking about what was "overdone" on Mickey's face, Elgmati said that botox was to blame. "It's so easy to overdo Botox," she explained. "There are no lines whatsoever on Mickey's forehead, which is a shame in a man's face. It's a really good idea to leave a few lines on the face so you don't lose your individual 'glow' and so you can still express yourself."

She was also sure that the actor "has full, maximum doses of Botox" to achieve his look, more frequently than he would probably have needed.

"In our brain, Mickey's look doesn't add up," Elgmati continued. "His eyes still look aged whereas there's no lines whatsoever around his forehead. His muscles are now in an almost permanently paralyzed state from constant Botox. The brain learns that it’s not able to move certain muscles and you actually lose the ability to move certain areas of your face."

Skateboard accident

Mickey took a nasty tumble while out riding his skateboard three years ago as she shared a snap of the top half of his face with a bloody gash and scrapes across his forehead.

Taking to Instagram, lamenting his misfortune, he said: "Looks like my skateboarding days are over," adding an eye roll emoji.

Regret over taking steroids

Last year, Mickey opened up about his regret over taking steroids and eating massive meals six times a day to gain weight for his role in 2008 movie, The Wrestler.

The actor always denied using the performance-enhancing drug to achieve his mega muscles in the Oscar-nominated flick.

However, as he reflected on his role on , Mickey admitted to using the drug and said it took him four or five years to shift the weight.

Conceding the plan to prepare for the role was "not great" or "well thought out", he said: "It was not a great well thought out plan, I of course used steroids and ate enormous amounts of food 6 times a day.

"Was very stupid on my part my, only real accomplishment was long hrs in gym. I regret it but I've made many dumb ass decisions in my life. I cringe when I see photos of myself.

"I never said I was the sharpest pencil in the box. Oh well I was thinking out loud and thought perhaps I could get this message out to some young dude who wants to get bigger and bigger."
