Camilla's 'change' since becoming Queen as son Tom Parker Bowles reveals all

Camilla has undergone a significant “change” since becoming Queen, her son Tom Parker Bowles revealed.

The 49-year-old food writer and critic saw his mother ascend to the throne alongside her husband King Charles III in May last year, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022. Tom, who is busy promoting his new cookbook Cooking and the Crown: Royal Recipes from Queen Victoria to King Charles III, said during a recent interview that his mother, 77, has seen her retirement plans change significantly now she’s Queen.

Speaking on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Virgin Radio, Tom said his mother is still the same person she was before being crowned Queen, but has a much busier schedule nowadays. “I think her job description has perhaps changed. Her job has massively changed. Most people are retiring at her age and she's going full tilt,” he explained.

Tom also revealed that his mother’s strict work ethic hasn’t been affected by her new title. “She’s a grafter. She is a grafter. She was a great mother. When you have to do stuff, she says ‘Just get on with it, do it, don’t talk about it, don’t moan about it,’” he recalled.

He also revealed Camilla and Charles are experts on foraging mushrooms. “I only know three kinds of mushrooms… there are a couple of serious foragers, actually, and I’m not just plugging it here, my mother and the King are good mushroomers, mycologists. They really know their stuff,” Tom revealed. “In Scotland, I go with my mother and she knows her stuff about mushrooms but I wouldn’t... you pick the wrong one, you’re dead.”

Last month, Tom gave an insight into the diets of his mother and stepfather, and shared fascinating details of their daily routine when they’re at home together. He said the couple eat “simple, healthy and resolutely seasonal food,” and said the monarch’s pantry is filled with a “seasonal bounty of the royal estates”.

He also said Charles “doesn’t eat lunch at all”, and will often skip the meal in favour of a laidback afternoon tea with his wife, while Camilla will have a “very light lunch” such as chicken soup or smoked salmon. Tom gave a sweet insight into the couple’s marriage, as he revealed they often prefer eating a relaxed dinner together “away from the official pomp and circumstance.”
