CJ was then given a segment explaining his past, with photos of him as a kid and on DWTS as he divulged: “I started singing very young at two years old, and my babysitter told my mum that I could sing… and [my mum] put me in a talent show. My very first song I ever sang was a Whitney Houston song, and my mother was like, ‘Well, damn, my son can sing.’
“I’ve been very lucky to have the career I’ve had. The last 10 years, I’ve been one of the singers of Dancing With the Stars. Bruno is one of the judges now, he’s going to be judging me on the singing, so… it’s a little bit nervewracking.”
The singer added: “A lot of times people hear my voice but they don’t know who’s singing. But I have always wanted to be in front, so I’m just ready for the to see that.”
Back in the arena, Bruno asked his pal: “Why do you want to perform here on this stage?” CJ explained that he wanted the world’s attention, sharing: “You actually inspired me. We worked together on the show and then I saw you on here, and I was just like, ‘BGT, I mean come on, you can’t get any bigger. Simon, I’ve been chasing you for a minute.”
After his long introduction CJ got started, going back to his roots by singing ’s ‘I Will Always Love You.’ Bruno started weeping just moments in, and as CJ hit the high notes even Simon punched his fists in the air as the crowd roared.
All four of the judges stood to join the standing ovation as CJ finished the iconic song, with the singer blinking back tears at the overwhelming reaction. described his performance as “spellbinding,” and pointed out that while he works on DWTS, he’s “never seen” as he should be - while Simon called his song a “vocal masterclass.”
On X, formerly known as , fans didn’t quite agree with the judges - who all voted him through without pause - and claimed that as CJ’s already a pro, he shouldn't have been on the show.
Alongside plenty of praise, one person wrote: “Shouldn’t be on the show. Professional singer.” A second agreed: “He’s good , but he’s professional, how can the others compete to that.”
“Sorry but Bruno knows him, he is on prime time tv in the USA, shouldn't be on BGT. Of course he will go through. Please spare me Bruno’s tears,” a third viewer raged.
“Already famous in America ….. shouldn’t be allowed on the show. It’s getting a joke now,” said another, while a final commenter simply stated: “Show full of ringers.”
